Contemporary garden design utilises 'clean' design lines in conjunction with an emphasis on hard landscaping to create a simple, yet bold architectural statement. This type of design has emerged over the past 20 years as a popular choice for both private and public design. Planting style is simplified with a minimal number of bold plants repeated throughout the design and usually includes grasses and other plants with striking architectural form. If plants are chosen properly, maintenance can be minimal since hard landscaping tends to dominate. Lighting is an integral element of the contemporary landscape as well, usually being implemented in a subtle manner to highlight key features of the design.
