Formal Garden Design

Bringing structure to your garden...

Formal-Garden-pics-leftFormal-Garden-pics-right_000Formal gardens are the most maintenance intense landscapes, yet create a dramatic effect at any scale. Gardens of this style are laid out using geometric lines and patterns set along symmetrical axes, sometimes linked to the architecture of the house. Lawns and hedges create the main structure of the garden, which are then supported by a sub-structure of trees, shrubs and ornamental planting; usually kept neatly trimmed and pruned. Examples of formal gardens include Blenheim Palace, Versailles and Dumbarton Oaks in Washington D.C.

Other elements of formal gardens include outlying buildings, avenues, paths, parterres, terraces, topiary, hedges, pergolas and pools of reflective water, fountains and sculpture. All elements are laid out on the axes of the garden and constructed of similar materials, creating a dramatic and stunning example of man's abilities to shape the landscape.

Although often thought of at a large scale, formal gardens can be adapted into small garden spaces as well. Common examples of small formal gardens include knot gardens, or gardens laid out in simple geometric shapes. Areas of box-trimmed hedging can be interplanted with less formal species, creating a structured garden with a formal feel.

ELD's extensive knowledge of plants, design history and current methods of construction give us the unique capability to design and implement any landscape and garden style, at any scale.

We undertake work throughout East Anglia including the counties of Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire. Work further afield may also be considered.
